Sildafiskje / Herring Fishing
Three layer reduction linocut
The scene depicted in this print comes from an old photo showing herring fishing in Norway in the 1930s.
I immediately fell for the dynamic in the image,
you can almost hear the men shouting at each other
and sense the net being dragged up
while the herring desperately tries to get away.

Gamle Haugesund / Old Haugesund
Four layer reduction linocut
A gift for my brother – 'Gamle Haugesund'
depicts Smedasundet, a strait in Haugesund,
the town close to where we grew up.
The town and especially the harbour were lively
and thriving places around the turn of the century.
My brother lives in a house with possibly the best view
you could ever wish for: the wide open sea.
Therefore, when I set out to make a print for his birthday, it had to be a maritime theme.

While I was reading our local newspaper,
I came across a photographer who had lived in Haugesund around the turn of the century.
Severin Malmin (1867-1947) was one of the first hobby photographers in town and had shot this motif of a busy day at the harbour, with the boats lining up waiting to go out fishing for 'the silver of the sea' — the herring.
