from lexico.com: 'recital – an enumeration or listing of connected names, facts, or events.'
Recital contains imprints of objects and dyed edges. Found objects from my coastal walks in Norway has been selected carefully to recreate a list. Each object, mainly wood, contains a carved word that derives from an old sketchbook of mine. Amongst drawings, childish handwriting and thoughts is a list written by my late grandfather. At first glance a mere selection of random listings such as shapes, plants and birds, but in Recital, the words describe what is precious and invaluable within the shared moments. The choice of words is not related to chance but provides insight into circumstances and thus valuable fragments to mend fractured memories. ‘Blå’, was presumably chosen by the child whose favourite colour was, and still is, blue. While ’Juleglede’, or ‘Christmas Begonia’, expresses joy, in particular the joy of Christmas.
The edges have been dyed with Prussian blue ink mixed with seawater. In addition to found objects, I also collected seawater on my coastal walks. Therefore, the right-hand edge represents the Norwegian west coast, and likewise, the left-hand edge represents the UK. The latter contains seawater from the east coast of Scotland where I lived for five years and thus, leaves me somewhere in-between. Or outside?
Recital commemorates what once was, but is first and foremost a celebration of shared stories and moments.
